This drum is named Matahari (or Sun) to represent the warmth of a parent's love. The West African symbol carved into the drum is called The Leg of a Hen. It is a symbol of the ideal nature of parents, being both protective and corrective. A close translation is "The hen treads on her chicks, but she does not injure them." ¹
