Music Proves Powerful Tool for Preemie Development
A calm baby is a happy baby, and that may not be truer than when considering the health and wellness of a preemie. The New York Times reports that one in nine babies born are premature, inviting a host of developmental issues that can be life-long. Research has shown, however, that a premature infant exposed to live music in the NICU has a better chance of “beating the odds” than those subjected to the harsh lighting and disruptive sounds of monitors and medical equipment. Many of the preemies exposed to music are leaving the NICU earlier, with neonatologists citing the relaxation of music is helping these babies focus on healing, rather than the stressful hospital environment.
