Alaska Unites Drumming Styles

Taiko and Alaska Native drumming are coming together in an interesting way. East High students in Anchorage, Alaska, will be visiting their neighbors in Point Hope to share their love for the Japanese drumming style known as Taiko. The students will visit peers at Tikigaq School through the help of a grant from the Mockingbird Foundation. The Foundation began in 1997 and has shared more than $700,000 to support music education. Another group that is helping with the trip is Alaska’s Kids, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting cultural projects for the youth of Alaska. The students hope to share and learn, as well.
