Watch HD Video Demonstration of this Udu:
The Udu is a hollow, jug-shaped drum that produces a deep, defined bass tone and soothing effects that sound very much like droplets of falling water. The udu name itself comes from the Nigerian Ibo language and means "pottery." That's because the udu drum evolved from empty clay vases Ibo women would tap and play during tribal ceremonies and rituals.
This modernized udu stays true to centuries-old African traditions with ceramic clay construction, a textured playing surface and a light, golden honey finish. Because they are crafted by hand, no two are ever exactly the same in look or sound. Each drum will have its own individual tonal values that you can explore and enjoy. The drum offers good projection, but you can amplify the unique sounds coming from within by using a small microphone.
The udu is almost always played while you're sitting down and holding it in your lap, but thanks to its padded base, you can also place the udu on the floor or on a table. Play any part of the drum with your hands or fingers, either tapping it on the sides or moving your hands away from the hole that lets sound escape. Rubbing the textured surface allows you to create interesting tonal variations. It measures 14"H x 11" Dia.
