Watch HD Video Demonstration of this Udu:
The udu name itself means "pottery" and is derived from the Nigerian Ibo language. Inspired by water jugs used in traditional African rituals and ceremonies, this hollow, teardrop-shaped ceramic drum is made from clay with a textured playing surface and warm, green color finish.
Because each drum is crafted and formed by hand, no two are ever exactly alike in look or sound. It's as much a working musical instrument as one-of-a-kind collectible or shelf decoration! Every drum features its own individual tonal values and well-defined bass tones. The round hole on front and on top creates unique reverberating notes when struck with a flat palm. You can even mount a small microphone nearby to amplify the unique sounds coming from within the hollow walls.
The udu is typically played while you're sitting down and holding it in your lap. It also features a padded base so you can place it on the floor or on a table, too. Play any part of the drum by slapping it with your palms or tapping it with your fingers. You can also create interesting tonal variations by rubbing the textured outer surface. It measures 12 1/2"H x 8" Dia.
