The guiro itself is an untuned instrument that’s played by repeatedly scraping or tapping its evenly spaced, notched sides with the included wooden scraper to produce a steady, ratchet-like sound. Varying the duration, length and speed of your stroke influences the desired sound effect. For a musical change of pace, you can also put away the scraper, hold the guiro in one hand and shake it gently for softer accents or more vigorously for louder, more impactful beats.
