Toca Origin Series Djembe, African Mask
The Toca Percussion Origin Series Djembe are are carved from a single piece of environmentally friendly, plantation-grown mahogany and are lathe turned to maintain uniform thickness with a unique African Mask design.
The interior of the bowl of the drums feature lathed grooves and a rough-surfaced pattern that virtually eliminate overtones. The drums' bearing edges are hand carved to precise specifications. The Origin Series Djembes have natural goatskin heads. The resulting sound is one of the best ever offered by Toca.
There are four sizes of Origin Series Djembes, 12" x 7", 16" x 8", 20" x 10" and 24" x 12".

How to Tune a Djembe

Very happy with the build quality of the Toca Origin African Mask Djembe. This model is from their intermediate line of drums that uses higher quality wood. The shell is carved from mahogany wood sourced from a government regulated plantation in Indonesia. This means that rainforests are not sacrificed for this drum and the trees used are replanted. The traditional goatskin drumhead is a bleached skin which means that it will be lighter in color than a professional-grade goatskin. The sound quality is crisp and tends to be a little brighter than what you would get with a thicker, unbleached drum head. The drum is tuned using a rope tuning method. Toca does not tune their drums prior to shipping, so be sure to watch the video above on how to tune as you will want to tune it up before your first jam session. The carving and antique painted finish on this drum really bring it together and we have been happy to see consistent quality on all of the units we've received from Toca. Overall, highly recommended for beginner to intermediate players and suitable for student drummers.
