In today's lesson, I will teach you my djembe solo technique #2. It is for beginner, intermediate and advanced players. It starts with a basic part that beginners can pick up and then builds to a more complicated section that advanced players will enjoy learning.

Solo Technique #2 is based on "djembe language" or traditional phrases in a link or "chain of events" This can be used in any 4/4 rhythm.

In this lesson we focus on the djembe solo.

What is a djembe solo?
There are 4 types of djembe solos.

• Hybrid Fusion or Freestyle Solo - you play whatever you want
• Traditional or Djembe Original - a specific solo that goes with a specific rhythm
• Djembe Language - based on traditional drumming or djembe language however it can be used in a variety of rhythms
• Fundamentals - based on rhythm fundamentals such as upbeats, down beats, triplets going across the drum

Traditionally in West Africa, the djembe solo is used as a way to interact with a dancer. It can be a competition or a way to mark steps for the dancer to accent the dancer's step.

The djembe solo is a group of phrases that happen one after another in a sequence or chain of events.
